The Many Roads of the Great Smoky Mountains

View the beautiful fall colors of the Great Smoky Mountains. There are 384 miles of roads that wind through the Smokies offering breathtaking views of mountains, valleys, streams, forests, and historical sites.

Cades Cove Loop an 11-mile road offering one of the best opportunities to see wildlife, and a popular excursion for fall visitors to the park. There are several well preserved historical buildings to explore as well as a visitor center.

Cataloochee an isolated valley with abundance of wildlife and well preserved historical buildings near Maggie Valley.

Heintooga Ridge and Balsam Mountain is a high elevation tour with frequent overlooks and summertime wildflowers.

Little River Road which was originally a railroad bed road, is now an 18-mile route running from Sugarlands Visitor Center to the entrance of Cades Cove.

Newfound Gap-Clingman's Dome-The Newfound Gap road is the only one that completely traverses the Park, running 132 miles between Cherokee, N.C. and Gatlinburg, TN. (Fall colors are usually seen in higher elevation from early October but aren't typically as colorful as in the lower elevations. If you want a glimpse of some beautiful scenary, the higher elevations offer better views of the surrounding mountains.)

Parson Branch an 8-mile gravel road that leads from Cades Cove Loop Road to US 129 toward the North Carolina side of the Park and Calderwood Dam. The Parson Branch exit is just after the Cades Cove Visitor Center. No RVs or trailers are allowed.

Rich Mountain Road runs one way, 7 miles north from Cades Cove Loop to the Park boundary of Rich Mountain Gap and down the mountain to Townsend, TN. It's peaceful, quiet, and beautiful- definitely worth the drive.

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail a 5-mile one way road near Gatlinburg, TN. The creek runs parallel with the narrow road for much of the drive. No trucks, RVs, and trailers are allowed.

Winter Magic Tune & Tales in the Gatlinburg, TN

The City of Gatlinburg livens up the holiday season with free weekend entertainment by presenting the Gatlinburg Winter Magic version of its Smoky Mountain Tunes & Tales program live on the Parkway on Friday and Saturday nights between Than...
ksgiving and Christmas Eve.

Groups of Dickens-style holiday carolers dressed in traditional Victorian era costumes will stroll along the Parkway in downtown Gatlinburg from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the evenings of November 23-24 and December 1, 7-8, 14-15 and 21-22.

Zeno the Gatlinburg Bear will be delaying hibernation this year to make occasional appearances and greet holiday visitors on the streets as well.

During Gatlinburg Winter Magic, the City magically lights up the winter nights with spectacular light displays throughout town, featuring all LED bulbs. The length of the Parkway is lined by a forest of branches and scrolls, accentuating the timeless displays visitors have grown accustomed to over the past 22 years including animals indigenous to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, busy black bears, fanciful snowmen, dancing fountains, a group of international children, toy soliders and a shiny rocking horse.

Smoky Mountain FREE Activities

Looking for activities to do on your Smoky Mt. Vacation without breaking the bank.  Some of these are FREE, and some are budget friendly activities to help you plan your vacation.

PARK RELATED/NATURE-Cades Cove, Motor Nature trail, Clingman's Dome, the Sugarland's Visitor center, hiking trails, waterfall trails, the Gatlinburg pulloff, etc. With just the cost of gas to drive to them & a dollar "donation" if you want a pamplet that talks about the site, you can find this to be a very inexpensive day outing for the family.

Cades Cove Loop offers a peek at historic churches and buildings in addition to the motor nature trail you drive around the cove area. You can look for wildlife and walk through the cemetery and old buildings, churches, etc.

The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail & Cherokee Orchard Road in Gatlinburg (at the end of light #8) also has some cabins/buildings that you can look in. The motor trail is somewhat narrow and winding after you pass Cherokee Orchard Road and begin the Roaring Fork Trail. It is free to drive the trail. Note: This road is closed in the winter.

Clingman's Dome is a short drive from Gatlinburg through the national park. There is a steep 1/2 mile hike to the top lookout, but anyone can enjoy the views from the level parking lot area. This attraction is also free, unless you want to pick up a brochure on Clingman's Dome (donation $1.00 recommended).

The Sugarlands Visitor center has a museum type area set up in the back with "stuffed" real animals from the area, in addition to a 20 minute video on the park. These are both free, being inside the Visitor's Center. Plus there is a hiking trail out back that leads to a waterfall..Cataract Falls.

There are hiking trails all throughout the National Park. In addition, there are a few pulloffs (like the one on the Gatlinburg by-pass) that overlooks Gatlinburg. You can stop here and get a FREE aerial look at Gatlinburg. There are also several riverside pulloffs (like the Chimneys Picnic area) where you can walk right along the river and out onto the huge rocks in the river & catch a shady seat in the picnic area.

Shop and walk the strip in Gatlinburg. Take in the sounds, scents, and sights of the downtown district. Spend some time walking around this town and looking in the unique malls and shops. It doesn't cost you anything to window shop and take in the sights. There are also a few spots to have a seat near a waterfall or fountain in some of the malls.

Watch taffy being made on the old machines in the windows of the candy stores in downtown Gatlinburg. Sometimes you can get a free sample of the taffy.See fudge being made in the downtown Gatlinburg Candy stores & at the Old Mill Candy Kitchen in Old Mill Square (Pigeon Forge). Sometimes you can get a free sample of the fudge.

Visit the Old Mill Shopping District in Pigeon Forge with some duck food in hand (or you can buy a bag on location for a dollar or so). Along the bank of the little pigeon river, you can feed the ducks and watch the wheel on the side of the mill turn. You can also peek in the general store and various shops, including the candy kitchen (get a FREE sample of fudge or taffy).
Tour the Old Mill and see how they make corn meal and other products. This attraction was NOT FREE, but is wallet friendly at $3.00 per person (2008 price). It is only about a 30 minute tour, but offers a unique peek at the history of the town of Pigeon Forge. Many of the raw products made here at the Old Mill are used as ingredients for the Old Mill Restaurant recipes.

The Gatlinburg Community center has budget friendly pay per use fees for their amenities, which include an indoor pool and bowling alley. It also looks like they have racquetball, tennis, a skate park, frisbee golf, aerobics, fitness center and gymnasium. The pay per use fees/rates are $2 for bowling or pool use for adults & slightly less for kids/seniors.

Visit a "natural waterpark". You can go swimming in one of the local swimming holes, such as Midnight Hole, the "Y" in Townsend, or the swimming hole area near the Sinks.

Sprintime in the Smokies

Spring in the Great Smoky Mountains, with warmer weather and longer days upon us, it's the perfect time to plan a trip and here at the Beary Blessed Cabin we are offering an April/May Special of stay 3 Nights the 4th is FREE, its the perfect time to come and enjoy the beauty of the Smokies during the springtime.

With the comfortable temperatures during the springtime it is a great time to explore all The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has to offer. The park is known as the "wildflower park" for it's beautiful spring and summer flower displays along roadways and hiking trails. Every spring the park hosts the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage. The 62nd annual pilgrimage will take place April 25-28, 2012.   You can enjoy a number of Art classes, nature walks, tours, and seminars which are among the activities offered to participants. Indoor activities will be held at various locations in Gatlinburg, TN, while outdoor activities will be held in the park. Onsite registration begins April 24, 2012 at 5pm at the Mills Conference Center in Gatlinburg. For more information visit springwildflowerpilgrimage.org.

If you enjoy being outside, you will find the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to be exciting and full of adventure with the many scenic drives, camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and horseback riding which are just a few things visitor can participate in. Most of the park activities are free which can make your vacation more enjoyable.

If hiking is something you want to engage in, then there are trails in the park that range from short quiet walks to more strenuous hikes, with some leading to breathtaking views and waterfalls. Now is the perfect time to enjoy the scenery in it's Springlike-state while the weather is pleasant.

There are over several hundred miles of hiking trails in the park and many are open to horseback riding. Guided tours are available at Cades Cove (865) 448-9009, Smoky Mountain (865) 436-5634 and Sugarlands (865) 436-3535, near Gatlinburg, and Smokemont (828) 497-2373, near Cherokee. Rates depend on the tour's length. Check with nps.gov for details and information concerning independent horseback riding.

There are over 2,115 miles of streams within the park that are home to the last wild trout habitat in the eastern United States. Fishing is permitted in the park year round, but requires a valid TN or NC fishing license. Some restrictions apply, so be sure to check with nps.gov for information concerning times and any areas that may be prohibited.

One of our family's favorites, Cades Cove,  is also one of the more popular destinations in the park, with an 11-mile loop that takes visitors back to the time of the area's first settlers. Well preserved homesteads and churches offer a glimpse into their mountain life. The cove also offers the opportunities to view deer, bear, turkey, and other wildlife. A visitor center is located halfway through the loop at the Cable Mill area, where you will find restrooms and plenty of beautiful picnic spots. A designated picnic area is located at the cove's entrance with restrooms and several grilling sites. A store, campground, and horse riding stable are in the general vicinity as well.  Visit nps.gov for more details about Cades Cove and the park's many activities.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park website, nps.gov, has downloadable trip planners detailing popular sites, activities, and general information.  Come and enjoy the springtime in the Smokies, with all the fun, exciting things to do in the daytime, come back to a cozy, mountain view cabin and cook on the grill and soak your cares away in the brand new hot tub or the jetted jacuzzi.  Low rates, free nights and payment plans for an affordable Smoky Mountain Cabin, located between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, just minutes from the parkway's entrance, Dollywood and Ripley's Aquarium.
