Quaint Little Store Called the Panache With Beautiful Items in the Smokies

As some of you may know we recently just came back from the Smokies and we decided to try a few new shops out this time around.  We came across this quaint little shop with a lady sitting in her wing back chair by the fireplace, with baskets of yarn and threads surrounding her.  She spins her days knitting and crocheting some of the most beautiful items, such as hats, scarves, gloves and so many other items.  Jeanne M. Clark is the lady who weaves her magic into these unique creations.  Such a sweet lady and a joy to talk with, almost each piece has a story to go with it.  If your looking for a one of a kind gift for that special lady, then be sure to stop in and spend a few moments browsing this interesting little store called Panache located close to the Arts and Craft Community, the physical address is 1402 E. Parkway Suite 8, Gatlinburg, TN 37738

This World War 2 Style Hat we purchased for our daughter was a surprise she just loved, she had been hinting how much she liked it in the earlier part of the week and we snuck back and got it for her for Christmas. Something for all the ladies made especially by Jeanne.

A Real Treat, The Cabin Cafe

Sometimes you just find a rare treat along the way in life and this is just what our family found as we walked in the door of The Cabin Cafe  A quaint little cafe tucked ever so sweetly in the Arts and Craft Community. Being greeted by Duane the owner from the moment we walked in the door, to the friendly service we received, to the warm waves we departed with in making a new friend, we knew we had found a favorite new place to eat.  This little eatery has homemade foods, from rueben quiche, peanut butter pie, to mouthwatering sandwiches and soups, even foods prepared gluten free and vegan dishes.  The first trip we made was a let's check out this little place and get a cup of coffee!  The flavored coffees are so yummy, we enjoyed ours while eating a scrumptious piece of Peanut Butter Pie and watching Duane prepare many treats for his other patrons.  Since we had already eaten that day, we decided to come back and sample the many dishes he cooks from scratch.  The quiche is the best I have ever had, the meatball sandwich had just the right amount of sauce and cheeses added to it and of course another piece of peanut butter pie and flavored coffees were a must!  Between the atmosphere, the rustic charm, the food and the service you cannot go wrong with a trip to The Cabin Cafe  Visit their site to see their full menu, hours of operation and learn more about this little treat hidden in the Arts and Craft Community of the Smokies.  Tell Duane the Baileys from the Beary Blessed Cabin sent you and enjoy!

Shop Directory in Gatlinburg, Tennessee for Christmas

Shopping in Gatlinburg during the holidays is always one of my favorite things to do, so many neat little shops to find that perfect gift whether it’s art, crafts, homemade fudge, or pottery treasures. The Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community is a another little gem tucked just outside of Gatlinburg filled with handcrafted goods from jewelry, woodwork, preserves, pottery, artwork and more.  My personal favorite is The Village, I never tire of all the quaint little shops and the beautiful lights during the holiday, be sure to set aside some time for this and my next personal favorite Santa's Claus-et.

Covered Bridge in Sevierville, TN

Harrisburg Covered Bridge

There has been a covered bridge in the Harrisburg Community of Sevier County since the mid 1800s.  The bridge was used by the locals to cross the East Prong of the Little Pigeon River and connected the two separate parts of the community.
Originally, the Harrisburg Covered Bridge was named the McNutts Bridge but in 1875, the bridge was washed away during a storm and was completely destroyed.  Later that same year, a Sevier County Court established a committee to oversee the construction of a replacement bridge.  $50 was raised privately and $25 was donated by the county.  The people of the Harrisburg community donated all of the lumber that was needed and the labor.  The people of Harrisburg built the bridge and made sure they would be able to get back and forth to town easily and that they would be able to further grow their part of the county.
While other covered bridges around the country were being torn down, the people of Sevier County kept the Harrisburg Covered Bridge up and going.  IN the 1950s, the bridge was renovated, but by the 1970s the bridge had fallen into disrepair and was nearing the end of its life.  At this point in the bridges history, the Great Smokies Chapter and the Daughters of the American Revolution raised the money to keep the bridge up and to make sure that it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, you can still go visit the Harrisburg Bridge, take some pictures and drive through a bridge that has been around since 1875.  The bridge is 83 feet long, 14 feet wide and has 11-1/2 feet of clearance.  A true wonder of not only architecture but also of a people that wanted to keep their history alive.  Pencil the Harrisburg Covered Bridge into your next trip to the Smokies.  Drive a a little out of the way.  Head down Dolly Parton Parkway and follow it to Old State Highway 35.  Once you turn left on 35, follow the signs, the bridge is just a few miles down the road.  Get out and take some pictures and spend some time in real, living history.

Bringing Your Horse to the Park
Caution is advised in the backcountry. The park's backcountry is managed as a natural area where the forces of nature determine trail conditions. Please be prepared for swollen streams, bridge washouts, downed trees, and trail erosion-riding is not recommended from early December until May due to the seasonal nature of the trail maintenance program.

About 550 miles of the park's hiking trails are open to horses. Horses are restricted to trails specifically designated for horse use. If you wish to ride your own horse in the park, please obtain a copy of the park's trail map. This map indicates the trails on which you may ride horses and explains the park's rules and regulations concerning horse riding in the backcountry. It also provides information about backcountry camping, and permit requirements. To obtain an official trail map, stop at any park visitor center or call (865) 436-0120. The cost of the map is $1. You may also download a trail map.

Horses are allowed only on trails specifically designated for horse use. Off-trail or cross-country riding is prohibited. Horse riders may use designated campsites located on trails open to their use, however some backcountry campsites must be reserved in advance. These sites are indicated on the park's trail map.

Five drive-in horse camps provide ready access to backcountry horse trails in the park. Camps are located at Cades Cove (Anthony Creek), Big Creek, Cataloochee, Round Bottom, and Towstring. Horse camps are open from April through October.

Another Rare Gem of the Smokies, Cataloochee

Cataloochee is a beautiful, fairly remote valley nestled on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Known today for Great Smoky Mountains National Park's elk reintroduction program, Cataloochee was once a farming community complete with a school, church, post office, and store. Of the nearly 200 structures that once stood in Cataloochee, only a handful remain. This is the park's best remaining example of historic frame construction. Hattie Caldwell Davis was born in Cataloochee and kindly shared some of her memories and knowledge of its history.

Rainbops, Beehive Outlet Store and the Smoky Mountains

OK, the last post was geared more toward the men, but this post is all about you girls!  One of my favorite shops in the Smokies is the beehive, located close to Smoky Mountain Knife Works.  This shop is filled with pocketbooks, jewelry, bows, accessories, and most importantly Rainbops!  Rainbops are those colorful boots that are all the rage now, by watching the video below you will be able to see a few pair of them and by visiting the store you can personally try a pair on and wonder how you ever lived without a pair of these.  Its a store I usually spend at least an hour in, if not more, so many things to look at and most of all the prices are reasonable.  So while the fellows are at Knife Works, you can be at the beehive, then off to the new Russell Stover Candy Outlet for some tasty treats, sounds like another wonderful afternoon in the Smokies to me!
