Tubing at the Smoky Mountain River Rat

One of our favorite things to do as a family during the summer months is to head to our favorite tubing spot which is located on the Little River located in Townsend. It makes for a lazy, fun filled day just drifting down the river at an easy pace watching all the beautiful scenery go by. Since you are able to tube all day at one low price, we normally pack us a picnic lunch and have it mid afternoon, then after a good drying off at the end of the day, we go just a little ways down the road and head into Cades Cove

where late in the afternoon you will see the wildlife coming out to eat

OPENING IN SPRING 2011

Pigeon Forge's newest attraction, the Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Feud , will be opening soon in the Black Bear Jamboree Theater.

The theater has been transformed into two hillbilly styles homesteads, complete with barnyard areas and the world's largest moonshine still. Included in the still will be an interactive learning center focused on the history of Appalachian mountain life.

The family friendly show, which is based on the famous rivalry between the Hatfield and McCoy families, will combine music, comedy, stunts, and down-home cooking.

Audience members will be given special seating, either on the Hatfield or McCoy side. Adding to the fun, audience members will also be given opportunities to participate in the show.

First Penguins to Call Gatlinburg Home, now Living the Good Life at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies | Ripleys Newsroom

The playful colony of Blackfooted Penguins is now totally acclimated to their home in the new $5 million, state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor habitat – ready to meet their public.

The unique, naturalistic exhibit is the largest and costliest expansion ever at the aquarium, now celebrating its 10th year in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. More than 12 million have visited the aquarium since its opening in December 2000.

Fast Eddie and the gang now reside in a habitat that closely models their native homes. Naturalistic rockwork surrounded by more than 30,000 gallons of temperature controlled saltwater depict the coastal island rookeries along the coast of South Africa.

Aquarium guests are able to view the penguins from both above and below water level and unique to this exhibit, visitors can crawl through clear underwater acrylic tunnels and pop up on the penguin’s private beach to view the birds nose to beak.

As visitors crawl through the tunnels, penguins swimming above and below them will have the opportunity to get a good close up of the human species!

The highly interactive habitat has two wave machines and multiple spa jets that create continual water movement which in turn creates an inviting watery playground for the birds.

“Our penguin habitat is a wonderful family experience that showcases these beautiful birds and adds a new dimension and added value to our guest’s aquarium visit,” said Ryan DeSear, General Manager of Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies. “Each penguin has its own little personality and charisma. The habitat is an entertaining and playful environment for both the humans and the penguins. I’m not sure which species is having more fun.”

Ripley’s Vice President of Husbandry, Joe Choromanski, who helped create the exhibit, notes that “we have studied penguin exhibits from zoos and aquariums around the world, as well as their natural habitat, and we are building what we believe to be the most realistic, interactive and fun exhibit in existence.”

“We are pleased to be bringing another world class fun attraction to Gatlinburg as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies and also while marking our 40th year of family entertainment in this beautiful Smoky Mountain city,” said Jim Pattison Jr., president of Ripley Entertainment Inc.

The penguins who are now calling Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies home are all captive bred and are part of the Species Survival Plan of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. When they reach breeding age, they too will contribute to the survival of this species in the wild.

Relive the Vovage of the Titantic

Pigeon Forge is now home to a new attraction, a giant 30,000-square-foot ship-shaped museum attraction situated on 5.69 acres, which exhibits one of the largest permanent collections of Titanic artifacts and memorabilia. Inside, guests enter a unique world where they can climb an exact replica of the most famous staircase - Titanic's hand-crafted Grand Staircase.

Guests will receive a boarding pass of an actual passenger/crew member. Experience first hand what Third Class and First Class accommodations were like on the ship. Grasp the wheel on the captain's bridge, tap out an SOS message on the ship's wireless system, and feel an iceberg. Plus there is an entire gallery devoted to the young visitors called - Tot-Titanic .

Each guest will believe they are on the Titanic, experiencing first hand what it was like when Titanic set sail on her maiden voyage April 10, 1912. The Titanic museum attraction commemorates the lives of the 2,223 souls who embarked on a voyage into history and tell the compelling story of the memorable events that took place April, 1912, that led to the loss of 1,517 of them.

This new $25 million permanent museum is a half-scale, three-deck reproduction of the Titanic. The museum houses 20 galleries that display hundreds of authentic Titanic artifacts that were carried from the ship and into lifeboats by passengers and crew and those found afloat soon after the ship sunk.

Inside the interactive attraction, visitors find full-size reproductions, built to actual Titanic blueprints, of a first class suite, first class hallways, third class accommodations and an exact reproduction of the grand staircase, the museum’s centerpiece.

Visitors will be able to dip their hands in water the same temperature as the ocean when the Titanic sank. There are plenty of interactive activities including the opportunity to sit inside a lifeboat and hear survivor stories. As guests enter the museum, each will be given a boarding pass of an actual Titanic passenger or crew. At the end of the tour, guests can then learn the fate of those individuals.

Wildflowers of the Smokies

The Smokies have many wildflowers and they are amazing in their diversity. The Park is home to close to 1,500 kinds of flowering plants according to the Great Smoky Mountains Natural History Association--including over 300 rare plants. The reason for this large number of species is due to several factors, including vast differences in altitude and temperature and lots of rain (averaging 90 inches per year), and the preservation efforts pursued by the National Park Service. The rare tall larkspur, grows to heights of 2 to 6 feet, has fewer lobes in the leaves and blooms in the summer. This plant bluish purple flowers with 5 petals, the upper sepal extending backwards into an upright spur. The 4 petals are very small, with 2 of them extending into the spur formed by the sepals. The leaves are mostly basal, palmate, and divided into 5 to 7 irregular segments. This flower can be found in rich woods throughout in late March to early May.

Dollywood's Festival of Nations

The 25th anniversary celebration of the Festival of Nations at Dollywood begin March 27th and concludes on April 26th. This years festival represents entertainment from around the world. Music, dancing food and art are among the things you will be able to enjoy.

2010 festival highlights the rhythms of the world with DRUM! , the enjoyment of 20 dancers, musicians, singer and drummers; South America rhythms of Jallmay; and Invaders, which is an ensemble steel orchestra.

Imagine' presented by Le Grand Cirque will be back this year by popular demand. You will be entertained by international acrobats, jugglers, aerialists, high wire artist, clowns, lavish costumes, music and breathtaking acts performed by this array.

Gatlinburg's Very Own Tunes & Tales

Smoky Mountain Tunes & Tales

It's early evening in downtown Gatlinburg and in the distance you can hear a dulcimer playing a chorus and the crowd has gathered around him and are clapping their hands to the rhythm. Down at the bridge in front of Ripleys, you may find Trout Catch Cal with his fishing line dangling over the side of the bridge telling tall tales while he demostrates fly fishing. Or maybe Horse Jaw Johnny who creates songs on the spot from information he gathers from the guest will be your favorite.
Somewhere around the next bend you hear those naughty Moonshine Boys who are drawing a crowd. Goose, the youngest of the brothers, brags on the moonshine mischiefs of himself and his kin at their hidden still nestled in the mountains. His brothers, Buck, Teeter and Skinny Bill, sit patiently by until Goose decides to “strike up a tune for the folks”. You will find their spirit contagious!

For those of you with a more serious side and who like history you may find Miss O’Shea, an actress who travels and has come into town to give a historical representation of the well-known local personage of Martha Jane Huskey Ogle facsinating, as she peaks your interest in the history of the area.

These lively characters bring the streets of Gatlinburg to life in the evening with all their stories, tall tales and songs. You will leave Gatlinburg feeling like you have been to a musical and a comedy show combined with a richness of history scattered throughtout everything you will see and feel.

The shows are performed 15 to 20 times each evening in 15 minute productions done simultaneously. They start at 5:30 in the evening and run till 10pm. The Tunes & Tales season began June 8th and will continue until September 3rd. Be sure to get into town early and eat at one of the wonderful restaurants and then take in this delightful entertainment. Great, clean family fun!

Cades Cove Is A Must For All Who Come to the Smokies

Cades Cove is an 11 mile loop one way that leads you through a scenic valley. Throughout this loop you can stop and let yourself drift back into time when life was much simplier. Visit historic cabins, churches tucked here and there and incredible wildlife is all around you. John Cable Mill is at the halfway point of the loop and offers a visitor center, where you can buy stone ground corn that is milled by a the huge water-powered millstone. Learn how food was preserved before the days of refrigeration at Elijah Oliver's spring house or visit one of the finest examples of craftmenship in the sawn log cabin built by Henry Whitehead.

Wide-open fields give you the enjoyment of viewing white-tail deer and beautiful mountains for a backdrop for those who love taking pictures. You may get a chance to see a bear, fox, turkeys or maybe even a wild boar as we did last spring. Maybe you like hiking, then Cades Cove offers you some wonderful trails. You can enjoy the beauty of Abrams Falls and the Cades Cove Nature Trail.

Cades Cove can have very heavy traffic during the summer and fall season. If possible tour Cades Cove on a weekday and arrive early in the morning to avoid delays. Bring your own food and drink, since none is provided on the Loop Road. Restrooms are located at the halfway point along with the Vistors Center. If you have never been through Cades Cove we do recommend purchasing the park's auto tour booklet so you can get a better understanding of the life that was lived in the valley so many years ago.

The Pigeon Forge Community Center offers 80,000 square feet of things to do, from swimming to bowling. You can enjoy a daily guest pass for as little as $6.00 to access most of the complex, bowling has an extra charge. Or if you just want to take the kids to the outdoor pool, which has a waterslide and a wading area you can do so for only $1.50 to $2.00 per day, per guest.

We 've been looking for you and you just don't know what your missing! All the fun and entertainment these here mountains offer, not to mention the peace and quiet you can find right here at the Beary Blessed Cabin.

To all the mama, papa and baby bears that have visited, we hope the scenes and the news in our buzz blog will bring happy memories and lure you to come back soon. We sure do miss you kind folks and our door is always open for you to come and stay for a spell.

We are all kind of snuggled in for the winter, snow showers they come and they go, I always like hibernation season. It gives me a chance to relax in one of our king beds or sip a cup of hot cocoa by the fireplace.

You can find papa bear kicked back in the recliner zipping through the remote on any one of these 3 TVs with satellite and DVDs that he has.
Now baby bear she likes to color pictures and go into town to play at Wacky Bear occasionally. As I said our winters are kind of slow and thats the way we like them, but every now and then we like to have company you know, so what are you waiting for, come on by.
